Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course (Proseminar) is dedicated to the topic of immigration and immigrants as an important aspect of the societal and cultural developments in the U.S. The focus is put on the experiences of immigrants of diverse countries of origin at different eras. These experiences are always also connected to the field of culture and communication. The course aims at providing insight into historical backgrounds and encouraging students to deal further with related issues.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance and active participation in class are mandatory. In addition, grades will be based on presentation, reading and working on compulsory and chosen literature, mid-term test, seminar paper (10-12 pages). An advanced level of English is required (oral and written).
Students who are not present in the first unit will be de-registered from the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of the course is to promote culture-specific knowledge as well as the consciousness for the complex connections between culture and language mediation. This process is stimulated by students' independent work on historical, cultural and social questions relating to the U.S. The following skills will be strengthened: speeking freely on a topic, formulating personal views, writing coherent texts, creating cross-connections.

Prüfungsstoff

The course is held in English. The themes are mostly worked out by the students themselves with the reading list and own research. The understanding of historical connections and effects on the present is deepend through single and group work, presentations and discussions. Working scientifically is practiced through exercises and the production of a seminar paper (Proseminararbeit).
