Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Introduction to translation and interpreting (interlingual and intralingual), discussion and practical study of different kinds of oral and written communication, critical discussion of criteria for successful translation and interpreting, preliminary exercises, consecutive interpreting (note taking).
The objectives of this course are to teach students how to quickly grasp essential information, how to work with different types of text or speech, and the importance of constantly improving all their working languages. Students will learn about the different requirements for interpreters and translators and explore their own strengths and weaknesses.
Clozing, paraphrasing, memory exercises, sight translation, written translations, holding and interpreting short speeches in class and in study groups (with logs), use of note-taking technique acquired in 'VO Introduction to Interpreting', discussion of challenges that can arise in interpreting or translation, peer feedback and self-evaluation.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- Translation assignment 35%
- Graded oral contributions (interpreting and preparatory exercises such as paraphrasing) 45%
- Contributions in class and as homework (feedback, active participation in discussion etc., research and preparation, short speeches, study group logs, etc.): 20%

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Excellent knowledge of working languages;
knowledge of translation/interpetration strategies discussed in class;
independent application of learned approaches in written and oral exercises;

Prüfungsstoff

It is expected that students can apply the theoretical input and examples discussed in class to new and texts/interpretation and work environments. Similarly, personal strategies and approaches should be developed to efficiently cope with job assignments, unfamiliar domains and genres. Individual problem solving will be demonstrated in written and oral contributions throughout the semester.
