Basics of survey methodology
• Research question, theoretical framework and data analysis plan
• Standardisation and quantification
• Total survey error
Introduction to comparative survey research
• Aims and challenges of comparative survey research
• Error and equivalence in comparative survey measurement
Basics of question and questionnaire design
• Types of questions, types of responses; asking about events, behaviors and attitudes
• The (social) psychology of survey response
• Best practice in question wording and visual design
• Response scales
• Response styles and other biases: acquiescence, social desirability bias
• More than the sum of its parts: crafting the questionnaire (routing, question order…)
Harmonisation for comparative surveys
• Types of harmonisation: input and output
• Survey questionnaire translation and adaptation
• Ex-ante output harmonisation
Comparative measurement of ‘background variables’
• What are background variables, and why do we need them?
• Approaches to the comparative measurement of specific background variables
• Detailed illustration using ‘educational attainment’
• Using international standards as coding frameworks
Quality assurance of cross-cultural questionnaires

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Prepare a paper (in English or German) of 4500-5000 words (excluding references), to be submitted to the instructor by June 12th, 2016 relating to the topics of the workshop and taking the workshop literature into account. Papers will be evaluated based on developing and treating a clear research question, theoretical and conceptual rigor, and active engagement with the contents of the workshop. 30% participation in class and 70% paper
