Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This class provides insight into the field of historical transformation studies and takes place in conjunction with the "Transformative Seminar" of the Research Center for the History of Transformation (RECET). Our concept of transformation is inspired by Karl Polanyi and looks beyond the hegemonic post-1989 teleologies of marketization and democratization. This approach also allows us to take a long-durée perspective on transformations, with emphasis on the interdisciplinary connections to sociology, economics, and cultural and social anthropology. Half of the sessions will be talks and discussions by external speakers invited to the RECET Transformative Seminar. In the other classes, we will discuss some key readings from historical and interdisciplinary transformation literatures.

In addition, there are two alternative ways of successfully completing this class (counting for 70% of the grade): writing a discussion paper (4-5 pp.) of one of the external presentations OR preparing and leading the discussion of one of the readings.
