Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This class provides insight into the fields of historical transformation studies and migration history and takes place in conjunction with the "Transformative Seminar" of the Research Center for the History of Transformation (RECET). Our concept of transformation is inspired by Karl Polanyi and looks beyond the hegemonic post-1989 teleologies of marketization and democratization. This approach also allows us to take a long-durée perspective on transformations in both "East" and "West" and in different historical contexts, with emphasis on the interdisciplinary connections to sociology, economics, and cultural and social anthropology. Half of the sessions will be talks and discussions by external speakers invited to the RECET Transformative Seminar. For the other classes, participants will suggest texts relevant to their own projects that we will discuss together.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance is mandatory (you may miss up to two sessions upon written notification). Active participation in class discussion is expected and makes up 30% of the overall grade. In addition, there are two alternative ways of successfully completing this class (counting for 70% of the grade): writing a discussion paper (4-5 pp.) of one of the external presentations OR choosing and preparing an article or book chapter relevant to your own project for discussion in class (including the preparation of guiding questions for class discussion and a presentation contextualizing the text within your project).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- Regular attendance (you may miss up to two sessions upon written notification)
- Active participation in class discussion (in particular when discussing texts)
- Discussion paper (4-5 pp.) of one of the external presentations, which needs to summarize and discuss the main topics and arguments of the talk
OR
- Choosing and preparing an article or book chapter relevant to your own project, which includes the preparaton of guiding questions for class discussion (to be submitted at least the week before the session) and a presentation during the session contextualizing the text within your project.
