Identität ist in der okzidentalen Denktradition eine eher zu spät gekommene Kategorie. Noch in Zeiten der Aufklärung in Philosophie, Literatur und Wissenschaft eher randständig, ist Identität insbesondere in diversen Diskursen der letzten Jahrzehnte zu einem theoretischen Leitbegriff geworden. Literarische Werke der Moderne wie jene von Robert Musil und Max Frisch kreisen freilich schon früh um jene Sicherheitsbestände des modernen Individuums, in denen es unsicher geworden ist, wer ‚man‘ ist.
In einem ersten Schritt steht also zu vermuten, dass Identität auf etwas verweist, das unter den Bedingungen von Moderne nicht mehr selbstverständlich und gewiss ist und was abhanden zu kommen scheint. In neuen Disziplinen des Denkens wie Psychologie, Psychoanalyse, Soziologie und Kulturwissenschaft und Gendertheorie wird Identität indes zu einem zentralen Brennpunkt mit gesellschaftspolitischen Implikationen.

In occidental thinking, identity is a rather late category. Even in the times of the Enlightenment in philosophy, literature and science, identity has become a theoretical concept, especially in various discourses of the last decades. Literary works of the modern age, such as those of Robert Musil and Max Frisch, of course, revolve early on around those security holdings of the modern individual, in which it has become uncertain who one is.
In a first step, it is to be assumed that identity refers to something that is no longer self-evident and certain under the conditions of modernity and which seems to be lost. In new disciplines of thought such as psychology, psychoanalysis, sociology and cultural studies and gender theory, however, identity becomes a central point with important political implications.
