Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Goal:
By the conclusion of this seminar, participants will:
- Acquire a comprehensive understanding of theoretical frameworks concerning parental involvement and parental engagement;
- Deconstruct prevalent monolingual biases and myths surrounding multilingualism within educational environments;
- Explore the challenges and existing opportunities for multilingual parental engagement;
- Develop practical strategies for fostering collaboration within multilingual families from a culturally sensitive perspective.

Content:
Parental engagement is known to have a pivotal role in children's educational performance. This seminar aims to explore this theme to support future teachers in developing a responsive and sensitive approach to their practice in culturally and linguistically diverse settings. Therefore, students across all subject-teaching disciplines are encouraged to delve into the complexities of parental engagement, with a particular emphasis on its intersection with multilingualism. As such, participants will engage with diverse concepts and perspectives related to parental involvement and engagement, analyzing their implications for educational practice. Key topics such as multilingual identity, language ideologies, and prevalent myths surrounding multilingualism will also be addressed. Moreover, the seminar will underscore the importance of teachers’ positions in deconstructing these myths and fostering inclusive learning environments. Drawing upon both literature review and practical examples, students will engage in discussions and reflections on the practical challenges of parental engagement. The invitation of guest speakers, such as educators, parents, and other stakeholders, is planned in order to broaden perspectives, foster critical thinking, and bridge theory with practice. This seminar is built from a perspective of collaborative construction of knowledge, therefore, active participation of students in discussions and group work is encouraged.

Methods:
This course will combine traditional lectures with plenary discussions, group work, independent research, and student presentations. Active participation is encouraged.
Although the primary language of instruction is English, discussions and written assignments in German or other languages are welcome. More on language policies will be outlined during the first session.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The assessment of this course consists of oral and written tasks, including active participation in the class discussions, group work and presentation, a portfolio of short assignments, and a final paper of approximately 2000 words (in group).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- Portfolio (continuous tasks during the semester): 40 points
- Final paper (approximately 2000 words – developed in a group): 30 points
- Presentation (reading and presenting academic articles in group): 20 points
- Active participation (participation in plenary, group, or online discussions): 10 points

A minimum of 60 points are required for a positive assessment of the course.
1 (sehr gut)- 100-90 Punkte
2 (gut)- 89-81 Punkte
3 (befriedigend)- 80-71 Punkte
4 (genügend)- 70-60 Punkte
5 (nicht genügend)- 59-0 Punkte

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is allowed only after consulting with the lecturer.
To ensure academic integrity, the lecturer may invite students for a grade-related discussion after written assignments are submitted.

Prüfungsstoff

All content covered in the course will be considered to assess the work. Supporting learning material will be available on Moodle.
