Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course aims to:
– Introduce key aspects of empirical research in education, including foundational approaches and methodologies
– Strengthen students' skills in formulating and refining research questions
– Equip students with basic tools to design and implement research strategies in practical settings
– Develop students’ ability to document and present research findings
– Provide practical experience by conducting an empirical study in collaboration with a partner school

Course methods include:
– project based work
– theoretical input
– individual and collaborative work
– plenum discussions
– workshop format

Project work focus: Defined by the project school
Language of instruction: English and German

Assignment criteria (Seminar)
— end-term research report (collaborative written assignment, 40 points)
— presentation (collaborative work, 20 points)
— meaningful participation in discussions, activities, and decision making processes (individual work, 30 points)
— assignments (individual work, 10 points)

Assignment criteria (practical placement)
— active participation in carrying out an empirical study at a partner school (data collection and documentation)

Assessment will be based on students' ability to
— understand and work towards the aims of the course,
— understand and follow guidelines (project, assignments, assessment criteria),
— implement theory into practice,
— think critically,
— construct and express clear arguments,
— work independently and in groups,
— organize their time and keep deadlines.

To complete the course, all areas of assessment must be positive.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

In order to pass the course students must
— carry out (parts of) an empirical study which involves data collection at a partner school
— write an end-term research report (collaborative work, assessed)
— deliver an in-class presentation (collaborative work, assessed)
— regularly participate in class with relevant contributions (discussions, activities, decision making-processes, assessed)
— complete on- and offline assignments (assessed)
— attend all session (attendance must be 100%)

2 (Good): 89-81 points
3 (Satisfactory): 80-71 points
