Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course addresses the challenges of modern scientific research, with a particular focus on effective scientific communication—both across disciplines and to the general public. It is open to MSc and PhD students in theoretical, computational, or experimental physics.

Whenever possible, students are encouraged to present their own research projects. This not only provides an opportunity to share their work, but also fosters connections with peers from other groups and broadens understanding of the diverse research directions within the field.

We will practice core formats of scientific communication, including slide presentations, poster presentations, pitch talks, and outreach demonstrations. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate their research in a clear, effective, and memorable way.

In addition, students will develop skills in giving constructive feedback, asking meaningful questions, and discussing challenges—strengthening their ability to collaborate effectively with peers.

The language of instruction is English.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence tools (e.g. ChatGPT) can support creativity and independent thinking. In this seminar, we encourage a critical and reflective approach to their use:
-Relevant information on copyright and usage rules for AI-generated text and images will be provided on Moodle—please review it carefully.
-If you use AI in your work, always acknowledge it and describe how it supported your creative process.
-Critically evaluate all AI-generated content and verify its accuracy.

These guidelines apply throughout the seminar, including all related project work.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Each student is required to:
give one scientific talk using novel presentation slides, create and present one scientific poster, develop and present one outreach talk, provide active peer feedback and to critically discuss scientific feedback. The students are free to choose the software to create the slides and poster.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Each student is required to have a positive evaluation to the following tasks:
- create and present one novel scientific talk on a research topic of interest
- create and present one novel poster on a research topic of interest
- create and present one short outreach presentation on a research topic of interest
Attendance and active participation is required: at most three sessions can be missed with prior explanatory statement.
Short assignments during the course will be provided to increase engagement and will assign bonus points on the final evaluation. The partial achievements are assessed according to the scientific soundness, accessibility for students from different fields, use of the methods and response to teacher's and peer's feedback.

- Slide design: 15 points.
- Slide presentation: 20 points.
- Poster design: 15 points.
- Poster presentation: 20 points.
- Outreach presentation: 10 points.
- Active participation (peer feedback, both online and live): 20 points

The grading will follow the scheme:
- 1 (excellent) 100 – 90 points
- 2 (good) 89 - 81 points
- 3 (satisfactory) 80 – 71 points
- 4 (sufficient) 70 – 61 points
- 5 (insufficient) 60 – 0 points
