Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
There will be continuous evaluation throughout the course. Each student is required to develop science communication activities in at least two different formats e.g. interactive instructional experiments, poster, presentation, quizz, animation, video. The activities developed in small teams will have to be presented in the seminar. All students are asked to provide feedback to their peers in addition to the input from experts. The final activities and materials should be presented to the intended target audience. The design of the activities is aimed for use beyond the seminar.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students should be able to understand the basic concepts of science communication. Students should be able to develop their own science communication material and they should be able to conduct science communication.
Requirement for a positive grade: attendance (at most three sessions can be missed with prior explanatory statement), substitute achievements by agreement, developing and presenting science communication activities in at least two different formats.
The partial achievements are assessed according to the scientific soundness, accessibility for the intended target audience and response to feedback:
- Active participation (peer feedback): 20 points
- Project management (status reports): 15 points
- Development of science communication activity: 15 points for each format
- Presentation of science communication activities: 35 pointsThe grading will follow the scheme:
- 1 (excellent) 100 – 90 points
- 2 (good) 89-81 points
- 3 (satisfactory) 80 – 71 points
- 4 (sufficient) 70 – 61 points
- 5 (insufficient) 60 – 0 points

Throughout the course students will develop specific science communication activities in small groups which relate to their academic work and interests. These science communication projects will be implemented in e.g. workshops or interactive talks.
After the course students will be able to communicate their research to defined groups of the general public using different methods and formats. They will have improved in their presentation and communication techniques and will have enhanced their collaboration skills with their peers and experts from these fields.
This course is open to PhD and MSc students from physics, chemistry and related subjects from the natural sciences, where possible students are encouraged to base the science communication activities on their own research projects/areas. The language of communication is English.
