    The seminar 570007 "Writing Science" will take place as a block course from 8 July 2024 to 19 July 2024, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in seminar room 1.4 at UBB, Djerassiplatz 1, 1030 Vienna.

    Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

    Writing is a fundamental activity for a working scientist. It is how we communicate our ideas in proposals and our results in papers. It is a fundamental skill that is essential to succeeding. This class will consider various aspects of science writing, recognizing that all communication is “story telling” and that stories have natural structures and flow to make them engaging.
    The focus of the class will be to elevate writing above the basic level and to teach students to write really effective documents.

    Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

    Classes will consist of a mix of interactive presentations on various topics, and writing a short paper (~ 2 pages) that will be run through peer group analysis and discussion.
    Prof. Schimel will also provide editorial input on these.
    There will also be some short exercises on editing and condensing that will be done in class.

    Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

    Students have basic competency in writing technical English and knowledge of research and publication processes.
