Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Content/thematic priorities

Talk of a permanent crisis in Europe has characterized the discourse on European policy for at least two decades. The international financial and economic crisis, Brexit, terrorist attacks, the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, new wars, migration and refugee movements, the electoral success of right-wing populist and extreme right-wing parties across Europe, authoritarian tendencies that endanger democracy, Euroscepticism and hostility towards the EU, and, most recently, the impact of Trump's second term in office on Europe can be cited as examples.
Against the backdrop of these developments at the national and supranational level, the course raises the question of current European challenges and perspectives.

Learning objectives

The aim is to critically reflect on and discuss selected issues and political scenarios that the European Union is currently facing and will continue to deal with in the future.

Learning methods

Combination of lecture and seminar (input from the course instructor, interactive phases, small group work and preparation/implementation of a panel discussion)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Type of assessment

Three tasks must be completed. These are graded individually. A maximum of 100 points are awarded for each task, 51 points are required for a passing grade. The individual assessments are weighted according to their importance for the overall grade (see percentages below):

• Active participation in the course activities (group work, plenary discussions, …) - 20%
• Preparation and realization of a panel discussion in teamwork (3-4 students), the topic will be decided jointly in class – 20 %
• Written examination in the form of an essay (5000-6000 characters) - students can choose one of the three proposed topics - 60% (date to be announced)

The assignments are to be completed in English

Assessment key

• 0-50 points: Not sufficient (5)
• 51-65 points: Sufficient (4)
• 66-77 points: Satisfactory (3)
• 78-89 points: Good (2)
• 90-100 points: Very good (1)
