Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Over the past decades we witnessed a growing debate over issues of misconduct in contemporary research the peak of the iceberg being major fraud cases. Universities and other research institutions have put in place explicit codes of conduct, have installed electronic screening programmes to detect plagiarism and many more. At the same time surveys among the research community have shown that the majority of researchers would admit off-record that they do have arranged data, left out inconvenient results, copied some smaller less important parts and many other practices of that kind. Yet unfortunately, these problems have often been addressed by introducing formal rules and by isolating the person that misbehaved and by stressing a personal(ity) problem.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This workshop will address the issue from a different perspective, and look at the broad variety of forms and formats of scientific misconduct as well as the conditions that support this kind of development. Thus we will look at scientific practices in the context of changed and still changing research environments and conditions of living in/of research: Time structures, reward & publication systems, careers, mobility, ..... and at the values embodied in them. This should lead us to better understand the diverse smaller forms of transgressions and better capture what this means for the own practice.

Prüfungsstoff

The workshop will be strongly debate oriented and is structured in three parts. The first will map the problem field of scientific misconduct/good scientific practice and will be more a lecture format with discussion. The second part will be group work on small cases, that should trigger more concrete reflections on the own values systems as well as on the more general norms and values which should guide research. The last part will them be oriented to draw the experiences and reflections together.
