Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This workshop offers an introduction to SciVerse Scopus. This multidisciplinary database was developed by Elsevier as an alternative to Web of Science and is officially running since 2004. Elsevier describes it as the 'World's Largest Database of Abstracts and Cited References' and is highly treasured for its user friendliness worldwide. Similar to Web of Science, Scopus connects the advantages of literature search in classic databases with the search and analyses of literature references and therefore allows citation analysis. Scopus encompasses over 41 million articles (abstracts and citations) from around 18 000 Journals (of which 17 500 are peer-reviewed, meaning that their articles are predominantly evaluated by scientists) of 5000 publishing houses. 90% of the in SCI (Science Citation Index) and SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index) recorded journals are included in Scopus. Due to heavy critique directed at Web of Science for focusing mainly on the English-speaking world, Scopus makes a special point of including publications in other languages than in English. The percentage of European journals in Scopus is much higher than it is in Web of Science.
