Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This is a learning by doing seminar. Although there is a significant amount of trainercentred presentation, theory is kept to a minimum in favour of practical exercises e.g. text analysis, discussion, peer-review, grammar and style exercises, and interactive, language-based games. There is also a handout of useful reference material. Students are encouraged to
(1) develop an awareness of the specifics of research English grammar and style
(2) identify their own strengths and weaknesses in these respects
(3) practice and improve their ability to express themselves correctly in academic English
(4) understand the dynamics of the writing process to increase confidence and enjoyment in planning and writing academic texts.

Grammar and style topics typically cover:

- Clauses and sub-clauses
- Readabilit

Modules on specific topics are integrated depending on the group, e.g.
- Writing about figures, charts and graphs
- Scientific fraud / plagiarism
- Quoting/ paraphrasing
- Argumentation structures
- Describing complex ideas, processes, objects etc.
- Time management
- Developing a positive relationship to the writing process
- Dealing with writer's block
