Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will support doctoral students in writing their scientific articles and papers in English and getting them published (whether as part of their dissertation project or generally in their field of study). The language of instruction and discussion in this course as well as of all materials used is English. This course is intended for students who are just beginning to write research articles or journal papers.
Writing academic texts in a foreign language - and getting them published in international journals - is arguably the most challenging task for young academics. This course will provide helpful guidance in both areas: language and writing competence as well as managing the submission and publication process.
The course begins with a step-by-step walkthrough of the writing and publication process of a scientific article or paper. It then proceeds to highlight possibilities for student writers to control and shape this process effectively. This begins with the search for publication venues and options in the English language; continues with different ways of submitting or proposing work to the editors (correspondence); successful strategies for drafting a proposal in English (abstract and proposal); ways of dealing with ongoing, not yet concluded research; various techniques for re-working and rewriting an article or paper (e.g. abridging); and finally shows several options in dealing with the editors' response (accepted - request for changes - rejected).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This course allows participants to become acquainted with the publication process, its pitfalls and opportunities, take a look behind the editors' choices and comments, and subsequently enables them to develop effective strategies for dealing with such situation as may arise. Beyond these process-oriented aspects, participants will learn in some detail about the linguistic and structural specifics of the English-language research article and gain some writing practice.

Prüfungsstoff

This course takes place on a single day. It is complemented by a second part, a workshop intended to allow in-depth revision of the students' current writing projects.
The course approaches the research article first in terms of the writing and publication process, allowing participants to formulate strategies for difficult situations such as may arise during this process. It also focuses on the linguistic quality of English-language research articles, discussing several exemplary texts and providing writing exercises to raise the students' second language competence.
