Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Scientific writing is a complex activity that involves skill, discipline and creativity, practice and intuition. This workshop focuses on the practical side of writing through analyzing text examples, writing exercises and revising your own texts. Part 2 focuses on advanced skills of academic writing, including persuasiveness and argumentation. The seminar contents include:

- A functional perspective on language (language as resource)
- Thematic progression (the 'red thread')
- Text types (including abstracts, articles or papers, monographs, and book reviews)
- Sections and their functions (including the introduction, literature review, methods/approach, results, discussion, and conclusion)
- Argumentation (structure, rhetorics, formulating conclusions)
- Perspective/Voice (finding your own voice in the field)
- Paragraphs (how to use them effectively)

All participants are encouraged to bring their own drafts and texts for discussion and feedback.

The overall aims of this workshop are:

- To reflect your own writing practices and habits, discipline-specific norms and conventions as well as language competence in academic English
- To raise awareness of good practice with respect to both the writing process and the text as product
- To learn and practice writing techniques to improve efficiency and quality of both process and product
