Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This is a one-day workshop that specifically addresses the question How to write mathematics? It is designed for students in mathematics and more generally any field that uses mathematical methods - applied math, computer science, economics, game theory, linguistics, statistics, theoretical biology, etc.The workshop has two parts. Part one focuses on attitudes, audience (Who are you writing for?), and voice (''I'' or ''we''? - or ''one''?), and addresses questions of narration specific to mathematical writing, for example, How to combine verbal and formal reasoning? Go from the general to the specific, or vice vera?Part two is more technical and focuses on the micro level of mathematical writing. It addresses questions like how to choose notation, deal with symbols in the text, typeset and reference mathematical formulae, etc.Throughout the workshop, the emphasis is not on presenting ''truths,'' but on highlighting choices and discussing the trade-offs between different alternatives.
