IMPORTANT INFORMATION concerning the exam on May 6th, 2020

Due to the pandemic, the exam of May 6th will be organised online via Moodle.

This information will help you do your exam online. Keep in mind that only students registered for the exam will have access to the exam.

The exam will have the format of a “Take Home Exam”: this means that you will be asked to download the exam questions and do your exam off-line. When you have finished, you upload it on Moodle. Your exam will consist of two parts:

(1) writing a “public piece” (= essay in generally understandable language) of about 3 pages, and

(2) answering three questions.

You will have two weeks for doing so.

The exam follows the so-called “open-book-format”. This means that you can use any auxiliary material you would like to use. You have, of course, to respect the rules of good scientific practice: quotes must be in quotation marks; you must indicate the source of the quotation; you have to write your “public piece” and answer the questions without any help from others. You are not allowed to copy and paste from texts or files of the lecturers or other authors. Please note that we may check your exam-document with the help of a plagiarism-detection programme. Additionally, we may do oral follow-up checks on a random basis. In case of cheating, the sanctioning procedure is the same as for non-digital formats of examination.

The questions concern only material presented in the lectures. To be fair to students not proficient in German, exam questions will not relate to the lecture that was given in German. Since we were unable to provide you with online material from Daniel Jacobs, there will be no questions on her lecture either.

IMPORTANT information regarding LANGUAGE: On your exam-sheet, you will find the questions and guidelines for the “public piece” in English. You may however write your "public piece" and answer the questions either in ENGLISH or in GERMAN.

On May 6th, 2020, 18:00 to 19:00, Moodle will be open for downloading your exam sheet. By the end of the following two weeks you have to upload your work on Moodle (the precise deadline will be announced on your exam sheet).

Minimal requirements and ranking:
The weighting of the public piece and the questions will be 50:50.

In an „open-book-format“-exam, the pure reproduction of knowledge cannot play the most important part. The quality of the texts you produce will play an important role. You have to formulate both the “public piece” and the answers to the questions in complete sentences. Thus, lists of buzzwords will not suffice. Note that your “public piece” should not exceed 1300 words, each of your answers not more than 300 words.
The ranking-criteria for both your essay and your answers will be:
Formal quality: correct language (English or German); the argumentative structure of the presentation; conceptual rigor.
Quality of content: You have to formulate the texts yourself (no one-to-one-repetitions of PP-slides or streams!). Address the topics that are significant for the question you are answering (avoid off-topics!). Show that you are able to relate topics of different kind to each other, may be even in new ways.

You will pass the exam if you achieve 60% of the total possible score.
Marking scheme:
90-100%: excellent (1)
80-89%: good (2)
70-79%: satisfactory (3)
60-69%: adequate (4)
below 60%: inadequate (5)
