Lecture and discussion. Approximately 50% of class time will consist of lectures designed to introduce basic concepts, arguments, problematics, and positions - with a view towards sparking further discussion and debate among students. Additional class time will be devoted to seminar-like review/research/discussion exercises designed to help students delve further into the major issues, debates, etc. The goal of both lecture and discussion is to help students move forward in informed and critical ways towards developing and refining their own views, arguments, and (provisional) positions regarding the large topics, issues, debates, and future possibilities explored in the course.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course assessment consists of a written exam. The first exam will take place during the final session of the class - Friday, January 24, 2013, starting 12.30. Additional exam dates will be announced.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course will introduce students to major figures, claims, evidence, and controversies in Medium Theory especially vis-a-vis important critiques from more recently developed mediatization theories. We will then explore how to bring these empirically-based communication theories into dialogue with philosophical approaches, as as to develop a strongly cross-disciplinary approach to major ethical and political matters - most centrally, the future of democratic processes and norms in increasingly mediatized societies.
