The lecture and tutorial will preferably take place in face-to-face mode. If the epidemiological situation so requires, parts of it will be held in digital mode ("hybrid mode"). In any case, there is a strong preference for presence mode.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

No knowledge of Biblical Hebrew is required. The course will gradually familiarise students with the Hebrew alphabet, Masoretic vowel theory and basics of nominal and verbal grammar and syntax. Participants will be guided to analyse and translate easy narrative texts of the Old Testament by themselves.
Objectives: independent analysis and translation of simple biblical-Hebrew texts; Mastery of the basic rules of ancient Hebrew grammar; Ability to critically evaluate translations.

Assessment and permitted materials

update 13.01.2022: the written exam on 27.01.2022 and 03.02.2022 will take place digitally. The exam questions are sent by email and discussed in a zoom meeting at the beginning of the exam (link on Moodle). At the end of the allotted time, they are to be sent back to the course leader by email. This is followed by individual discussions about the written exam (plausibility check, 10 minutes each, Appointment booking via TEMPUS, Link auf Moodle).

Curriculum 2015: Written exam of 45 minutes; two verses of a simple narrative text, questions to grammar at the end of winter term.
Curricula prior to 2015: Written exam about the topics of the two lectures of the academic year at the end of summer term. Eight to ten verses of a simple narrative text will have to be translated + 2 Grammar questions
Permitted materials: Dictionary and grammar charts.
Examination dates: 2022-01-27; 2022-02-03

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The written examination (translation or translation + grammar questions in the module examination) has to achieve 20 points. For a positive assessment at least 10 points must be achieved. 1 point is deducted for each serious mistake.

Examination topics

The course is taught as a combination of the lecture and active participation of the students in class. Additionally, exercises on „Moodle“ are offered. There is also a tutorial supporting the course ("Biblisches Hebräisch 1 - Tutorial,"). Attendance is strongly recommended.
