Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

No prior knowledge of Biblical Hebrew is required. The course will gradually familiarise students with the Hebrew alphabet, Masoretic vocalisation and the basics of grammar and syntax. Participants will be guided to analyse and translate easy texts of the Old Testament by themselves.
Course objectives: independent analysis and translation of simple Biblical Hebrew texts; mastery of the basic rules of ancient Hebrew grammar; ability to critically evaluate translations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam

In addition to the course, a tutorial will be offered in order to enable students to practice and enhance their knowledge with the help of a tutor. Attendance at the tutorial is not mandatory but strongly recommended.

The first possibility to take the exam will be in February 2023. Curriculum 2015: Written exam of 45 minutes at the end of the winter term; two verses of a simple text, grammar questions .
Curricula prior to 2015: Written exam about the topics of the two lectures of the academic year at the end of summer term. Eight to ten verses of a simple text will have to be translated + 2 Grammar questions

Permitted materials: will be announced in the course.

Examination dates: 2023-02-02; 2023-03-02; 2023-05-11; LAST exam on 2023-06-20

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Written exam. For a passing grade, a score of 50 % must be achieved.
