Aims, contents and method of the course

Clinical Rounds offer the students the opportunity of acquiring basic knowledge of ethical and legal Problems in the context of difficult situations of medical decision making and health care. Invited specialist are met in their clinical context or invited to the seminar and provide their insight.
This year's course is devoted to ethical issues at the end of life: companionship and care of the elderly and seriously ill children, palliative treatments and stay in hospice, provision for one's own end of life, legal, ethical and religious aspects of dealing with aging, dying and the deceased.

Assessment and permitted materials

Short presentations (group presentations) are to be prepared for the seminar. Regular attendance is required (absence must be excused by e-mail; absence from more than one double unit must be compensated by substitute performance). The seminar paper must offer an examination of a limited topic from the environment of the course from an ethical or legal point of view, which includes current literature and meets the scientific requirements. Notes and rules of assessment will be provided as a benchmark.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in discussion, short presentation, seminar paper (12 pages text plus cover sheet, table of contents and literature). In case of group work longer seminar paper (per person 9 pages plus cover sheet, table of contents and literature. A grading scale for the evaluation of the seminar paper will be provided.

Examination topics

Participation (reading, participation in discussion) (10%), presentations or other assignments (30%) and seminar paper (60%).
