Aims, contents and method of the course
The research seminar is particularly aimed at students who are planning or already working on a diploma thesis or dissertation on topics related to the theology and history of the Christian East (Orthodox, Oriental, and Catholic Eastern Churches). Through presentation and discussion, the aim is to place one's own scientific work in the context of subject-specific methodological guidelines. The aim is to practise formulating research questions and to supplement or deepen aspects. The seminar is also open to anyone interested in Eastern Church topics and discourses.
Assessment and permitted materials
Reading of the texts or materials uploaded to moodle for the respective seminar session
Regular active participation in the seminar sessions
Presentation-supported lecture (also possible in English after consultation with Prof. Németh) and leading the discussion after the presentation
Seminar paper (25,000 to 30,000 characters) according to the formal criteria customary at the faculty.All work must be done independently. The use of AI (e.g. ChatGPT, Google Bard) is only permitted for auxiliary work (e.g. literature research, searching for definitions, creating working translations, proofreading).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
active participation 20%, presentation 30%, preparation of the seminar paper 50%. The seminar paper will be subjected to a software-supported plagiarism check. In case of suspicion of the use of AI that has not been made transparent (e.g. through citation or indication of the type of use), the course director reserves the right to a “grade-relevant discussion”/“plausibility discussion”.
Attendance at all sessions, with up to 20% of the session time being tolerated without an excuse.
The deadline for submitting the seminar paper is August 29, 2025.
The final grade is calculated as the average of the weighted individual performances, whereby each individual performance must be positive.
