Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:

"Jesus sells" – despite (or perhaps precisely because of) certain crises within the Church, interest in the man from Nazareth remains unbroken! But who was he really, and what did he aim to achieve? Building on the material covered in the NT I foundational course, we will examine the historical facts about Jesus (his historical existence, the state of the sources, his birth and death dates) and identify the key points of his message (the Kingdom of God, miracles, parables, forgiveness of sins). In the end, we will address the question of how consistent it is that the itinerant preacher from Nazareth became the Christ of our faith.

Method:

Lecture with opportunities for questions and discussion. A script will be provided as a study and learning aid.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral Examination:

Questions will cover the content discussed in the lectures.

Permitted aids during the oral examination: An edition of the New Testament (NT).

In cases of suspected non-transparent use of AI (e.g., through citation or disclosure of the type of use), the course administration reserves the right to conduct a "grade-relevant discussion" or "plausibility interview."

First possible examination date: January 30, 2025; additional dates will follow in the summer semester of 2025.

Examination dates can be found at: http://bibelwissenschaft-ktf.univie.ac.at/studium/pruefungstermine/

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Examination Format:

3–4 questions will be asked, of which 50% must be answered correctly. The assessment will be based both on fundamental factual knowledge and on the level of theological reflection achieved.
