The course will be developed alongside a path with different stages leading from Stefan Zweig to the contemporary authors Elie Wiesel and Aharon Appelfeld:
- A medieval pogrom and its dark shade (Stefan Zweig)
- New techniques of execution and human indifference at the beginning of the 20th cent. (Franz Kafka)
- The prophet Jeremiah as an admonisher in a dreadful present (Franz Werfel)
- A determined opponent of reality (Jean Améry)
- Digging in words and sound to find the lost ones (Abraham Sutzkever)
- Anti-Jewish terror as an aftermath of the Shoah (Elie Wiesel)
- In the house of the language: I learned the Aleph-Bet (Aharon Appelfeld)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students are to know
- why and how the authors and selected parts of their works we will be dealing with were and are ways of resistance against catastrophes;
- the relevance of faith in connection with resistance of that kind;
- that religious confession does not decrease or idealize the catastrophes, but turns it to a quest of God;
- and that these authors belong to the long history of the Jewish memory.
