Aims, contents and method of the course

Although the LITURGY OF THE HOURS (= Stundengebet) after the Second Vatican Council was very much reformed, it has by no means achieved the status that it should be accorded in worship practice (especially in parishes). This is probably due in part to the different liturgical theological assessment of what constitutes the nature of the Liturgy of the Hours and who is the bearer of this form of worship. Even today, this form of liturgy is often regarded as a prayer of the Church to be performed solely by the priest. This course serves as an introduction to the history and theology of the Liturgy of the Hours and clarifies its form according to today's liturgical books. Its development in other Christian traditions, as well as alternative impulses and concrete forms of worship, will be examined in order to lead to an in-depth celebration in the communities.
HEORTOLOGY: In dealing with time, the Paschal faith in Christ is a creative element. In accordance with the Jewish tradition, the annual and weekly (”Wochenostern”) celebration of Easter arose, as well as festivals, the memory of the saints and also the Liturgy of the Hours (= Stundengebet). The lecture will introduce ithe history of the church year, the emergence of great festivals and the formation of different festive types. The course will investigate the theology of annual celebrations, which find their centre in the celebration of the Paschal Mystery. Against the background of the significance of celebration and celebration in society, questions about the localization of Christian festivals and the tasks and goals of liturgical-pastoral approaches to the liturgical year will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam of approximately 20 minutes about the topics of the lecture (as presented on moodle); from the summer semester 2020 on, students may combine two lectures (basic and advanced course in Liturgical Studies) in one oral exam of approximately 30 minutes, each examination date 4 such combined exams will be offered (around lunch time and at the end of the examination day); the exam is held in German; permitted materials are the respective liturgical books, which will be provided by the Department; at least 50 % of the given answers have to be correct in order to pass the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 50% of the answers must be correct.
