Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
In US American Moral Theology intense and controversial discussions started after Vatican II - discussions that were clearly different from those in Europe. While in Europe a new approach to Moral Theology was developed since the 1930s in the US the neo-scholastic model was still rampant up to the 1960s. After the council a number of prominent theologians - e.g. Charles Curran and Richard McCormick - developed a new way of ethical thinking including humanities, social siences etc. Others remained with Thomism and as "Traditionalists" criticized the other side (which they called "Revisionists") sharply.
In this seminar key topics of moral theological discussion worldwide are discussed alongside this US development. As theological ethicists we can draw from these discussions and can also compare them to European discussions or those from the Global South.
