    Information

    Aims, contents and method of the course

    The aim of the course is to convey the various foundations and sources of theology as a whole and of systematic theology in particular with regard to their specific meaning on the basis of a systematic-genetic concept of theology, and to gain a concept of theology that can be maintained in a critical way. Connected with this, the lecture series reflects on theological principles that are relevant due to the discourse with Judaic tradition, that entail special theological educational tasks, and that concern the status of theology as a contemporary science, its discursivity, and its claims of truth.

    The course deals with the following contents and topics:
    - Theology - a Christian development
    - Foundations of theology: revelation and faith as a principle of knowledge; the relationship between reason and faith; validity of scripture, tradition, teaching authority, and practice.
    - Practice of theology
    - "Knowledge of the Holy One as principle
    - Discourse - disparity - tuth/applicability

    Methods:
    - Lecture, presentations; discussions in the lecture hall
    - The lectures and the summaries of each topic will be available on Moodle platform.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    The examinations are oral (duration 15 minutes), consist of two independent parts of questions or topics and can be taken on the basis of the lecture topics as well as the substitute literature relevant to the examination. In addition, an oral examination can be taken in any consultation hour of the following semester against pre-registration via e-mail (wolfgang.treitler@univie.ac.at), the result will be added to the next officially announced examination date. Students must register for the official examination dates via U:Space and enter them in time lists on TEMPUS.
    The examination for this course can be taken until the end of the summer semester 2026 on the officially announced examination dates.

    Permitted aids during the examination: none.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    The oral exam consists of at least two independent questions or subject areas. A positive assessment of the examination is achieved if at least 50% of the respective questions or topics are presented or answered correctly; this rule applies to each individual question or topic; if one of them is below 50%, the overall examination is assessed negatively. – The examination performance is assessed as "sehr gut / very good" if the knowledge of the examination material clearly exceeds the average expected level of knowledge and if own, well based insights are brought in.
