Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is designed for advanced students (second year of the master-programme, students working on master-thesis and doctorate students). Current approaches in academic study of religions will be discussed in the context of concrete research-projects xcomducted by students and/or teacher.
General topics:
1. Scheduling of a research-project (delineate field of study, develop research question, coordination of research activities), collection and interpretation of data
2. How to do: working in archives, empirical social research, research on the internet
3. Financing of research projects: grants, fundings, writing of applications
4. Handling of research results and dissemination: possibilities for publication, writing an academic essay.

Assessment and permitted materials

30 % Presentation of research-project and participation in group-work
30 % Short papers on selected topics
40 % Final paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Developmentz of research-projects in the academic study of religions.
Capacity of choosing adequate methods.
Basic knowledge of possibilities of funding research and how to apply for grants.
Scheduling of dissemination strategies of results of research-projects.
Knowledge of current methodological and epistemological discussion within the field of academic study of religions.
Capacity to write an academic paper.

Examination topics

Presentation of research-projects and discussion.
Short papers on selected topics given by teacher and students and group-work.
Writing of papers on selected topics, review by teacher and discussion of the papers (partly using e-learning).
Final paper in the context of the current research-project of the students:
Scheduling of a research-project OR Working out of one chapter of thesis OR Writing an academic essay meeting the standards of peer-reviewed journals OR Writing an application for funding a research-project.
