Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course provides insights into the religious world of the Germanic and Celtic peoples. The knowledge about these scriptless cultures we take from archaeological finds and second-hand traditions. Accordingly, previous findings must be methodically questioned and reinterpreted again and again. Accordingly, ancient and medieval sources (in translation) about the Germanic and Celtic peoples will also be read and examined for their content and intention.
At the end of the course, students will be able to methodically reflect on and critically evaluate the acquisition of religious views of scriptless cultures in particular. Furthermore, they are able to analyze sources and texts as well as make comparisons independently.

Assessment and permitted materials

In addition to active and regular participation, each student has to give a presentation of about 20 minutes. In addition, each participant composes a written essay of approximately 7 pages, which must be completed by the end of the semester.
The grade awarded is composed of the grade of the essay (75%) and the grade of the presentation (25%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Willingness to work with sources is required for participation. This is subject to developments regarding the pandemic.

Examination topics

For each session, the lecturer will provide texts that each participant has to read in advance.
