Aims, contents and method of the course

Description:
The Eastern Orthodox Churches have been involved in the ecumenical movement since the 19th century and were among the founding members of the World Council of Churches. Representative of the Eastern Orthodox Churches have provided unique perspectives that have strongly influenced the ecumenical movement of the 20th century.
This seminar will explore the history of Eastern Orthodox ecumenism, the principles of Eastern Orthodox ecumenism and ecumenical hermeneutics, and the development and results of the multilateral and bilateral ecumenical dialogues that the Eastern Orthodox Churches have engaged in from the 19th century onward.

Learning outcomes:
• Students will know a general outline of the history of the Eastern Orthodox Churches’ involvement in the ecumenical movement.
• Students will be able to describe the principles of Eastern Orthodox ecumenism and ecumenical hermeneutics.
• Students will be able to name the major multilateral and bilateral ecumenical dialogues that the Eastern Orthodox Churches have engaged in.
• Students will be able to identify and theologically reflect on the results of the various multilateral and bilateral ecumenical dialogues that the Eastern Orthodox Churches have engaged in.

Learning activities:
Presentations by the teacher, presentations of assigned reading material by students, written summaries, group discussions, and written essays.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will be graded both on their active participation in groups discussion at the seminar and on their individual written work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mandatory participation in the seminars. Students may be absent two times without special cause. Students must achieve a minimum of 50 points to pass.

Examination topics

1 (sehr gut) -> 100-89 points
2 (gut) -> 88-76 points
3 (befriedigend) -> 75-63 points
4 (genügend) -> 62-50 points
5 (nicht genügend) -> 49-0 points
Written paper is worth 40 points, seminar presentations are worth 40 points, and participation in seminar discussion is worth 20 points.
