Aims, contents and method of the course

Learning Objectives:
Understanding of fundamental Islamic sources (Quran, Hadiths, Sira, Fiqh)
Ability to analyze Islamic texts in historical and contemporary contexts
Development of skills for critical reflection and discussion on Islamic teachings and practices

Contents of the Course:

Introduction to Islamic Sources:
Overview of the Quran, Hadiths, Sira, and Fiqh
Methods of source criticism and interpretation

The Quran:
God in the Quran, structure of the Quran, Paradise as main themes
Historical context of the revelations
Comparative analysis of selected Surahs (from the provided literature)

Hadiths – Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad:
Introduction to the science of Hadith
Examination of the authenticity and significance of Hadiths
Discussion of selected Hadiths and their impact on Islamic life

Sira – The Life of the Prophet Muhammad:
Biographical sources and their historical credibility
Analysis of key events in the life of the Prophet

Fiqh – Islamic Jurisprudence:
Fundamentals of Islamic law
Differences between the schools of law
Application of Fiqh in the modern world

Final Discussion and Reflection:
Critical engagement with the sources
Relevance for today's understanding of Islam

Methodology:
Interactive lectures with discussions
Analysis and presentation of source texts
Group work and discussion rounds

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation and active involvement in discussions
Presentation of a source analysis (from the literature provided)
Final essay on a selected topic

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive assessment is active participation and attendance (two absences are tolerated), as well as a positively completed presentation or presentation of a topic. The performances from participation, presentation and SE paper are used in a 50:50 ratio for the assessment.
