Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives: The lecture aims to present different approaches to the role of God in twentieth-century philosophy. A key question will be what motivates individual authors to return to the topic of God, even though at least the religious "belief in God can seem to be finished" (Bultmann).

Content: The widespread anti-metaphysical character of twentieth-century philosophy suggests at first that it can do without God. A closer look, however, reveals that God is by no means dead. On the contrary, the problem of God returns in many different and sometimes surprising ways. The lecture will discuss this in selected positions, in phenomenology, critical theory, analytical philosophy of religion, and in recourse to outsiders such as Georges Bataille and Simone Weil, up to contemporary positions (Desmond, Rentsch, Tetens).

Methods: The lecture is divided into 70 minutes of lecture and 20 minutes for questions and discussion.
