010089 BA God´s Eternal Convenant with Israel. Its Controversial Relevance to Christianity (2013S)

Continuous assessment of course work

The main concern of the bachelor seminar is to deal with different concepts of Catholic Theology in connection with God’s eternal covenant with Israel. This will show if and how the dialogue with Judaism was and is taken seriously by Catholic theologians, a dialogue that has been started slowly but surely by the Second Vatican Council. That is why the seminar will undertake the task to reflect on some of the most important concepts in history in present days. The focus will be twofold; on the one hand some theologians of the first centuries of Christianity are important because in those days Christian self-construction was built at least by setting border lines between Christianity and Judaism; on the other hand the focus will lie on contemporary concepts of theologies referring to the so-called New Covenant and its consequences.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

According to the twofold focus there are two main topics of this seminar:
First it has to work on the development of Christian perception of Judaism in the days of the early church fathers insofar they struggled with or against Judaism or Jews (even if they were literarily invented). It will become clear that in the 2nd century CE a change of the opponents took place, a slow, but steady shift from struggling against Gnostics to struggling against Jews and Judaism (that was also caused by regional conditions). This can be shown by the way from Irenaeus of Lyon to John Chrysostomos and his Discourse Against Judaizing Christians.
Secondly some of the most important contemporary theological reflections on the (ir-)relevance of Israel and its Eternal Covenant will be part of the seminar; views of pope John Paul II and pope Benedict XVI will be part of the seminar as well as implications of the thinking of contemporary theologians such as Karl-Heinz Menke, Elmar Salmann, and Friedrich-Wilhelm Marquardt.

- Complexity of Christian self-construction face to face to Judaism and its continued existence
- Disputed and frequently undermined theological relevance of the ongoing Jewish history, the Eternal Covenant of Israel
- Knowledge of the main problems and obstacles of a real acceptance of Israel’s Eternal Covenant by Christian teaching
- Prospects of overcoming some of these problems
