Aims, contents and method of the course

Advanced Sacramental Celebrations deals with the Celebration of the Eucharist.
According to the texts of the Second Vatican Council, the celebration of the Eucharist as the “commemoration of the death and resurrection of the Lord” (SC 47) is a central ecclesiastical act, and in the Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, it is even called the “source and culmination of all Christian life” (LG 11).
The lecture aims to elucidate the fundamental structures of the Eucharistic celebration, namely the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, on the basis of the most important sources. It aims to show where this celebration comes from, how its understanding and its form have changed over the centuries, and which theological and cultural historical factors are involved. This passage from the Jewish roots to the present should be a contribution to the understanding of the foundations of our present, historical celebration of the Eucharist in order to provide criteria that help to implement the Eucharistic celebration in a humane and theologically responsible way within communities. Particular emphasis will be placed on questions of the genesis and theology of the Eucharistic Prayers.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam of approximately 15 to 20 minutes covering the topics of the lecture (as presented on moodle); the exam is held in German; English and French are possible, when needed; permitted materials are the respective liturgical books, which will be provided by the Department; at least 50 % of the given answers have to be correct in order to pass the exam.
The material of the lecture (as found on the Moodle eLearning Platform) will be examined through oral examinations of about 15-20 minutes. Examinations are in German, if required in English or French. Allowed aids are liturgical books, provided during the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 50% of the answers must be correct.
