Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course serves Master and Ph.D. Students in Theology and Religious Sciences whose mother language is not German and who come from different academic systems. They are introduced to the criteria of academic research and writing at the Catholic Theological Faculty and given the opportunity of preparing texts and presentations.

With regard to the following topics, the course is carried out together with the proseminar "Basics and methods of theological research": https://ufind.univie.ac.at/en/course.html?lv=010115&semester=2024S : Library science/skills, literature research, knowledge about how to find and deal with sources, bibliography and citation (with introduction to Citavi 6), writing academic papers, oral presentations and handouts, getting to know the platform Moodle, hermeneutics and scientific concept of truth, criteria of academic argumentation as well as critical-appreciative feedback culture. This enables an exchange in a larger group of students (German and non-German native speakers) who have recently started their studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology.
In the three additional units, students write and discuss a short exposé on their own presentation topic that they have already started at home. Furthermore, a tutorial on the above-mentioned topics is offered in these units.

In order to improve your personal writing practice, please refer to the writing mentoring that is regularly offered at the Faculty of Protestant Theology and the Faculty of Catholic Theology: https://ctl.univie.ac.at/angebote-fuer-studierende/waehrend-des-studiums/schreibmentoring/ueberblick-ueber-alle-studienrichtungen/evangelische-theologie/

Assessment and permitted materials

• Preparation for the classes
• Homework according to the assignment (definition of theological terms, literature research, bibliography, preparation of an exposé, handout)
• Correct handling of academic literature (reading and structuring texts, familiarisation with theological terms, summarising academic texts)
• Presentation (on a self-chosen or assigned topic) with PowerPoint presentation and handout
• Oral participation (discussions, feedback)
• Elaboration of the topic of the presentation into a short written paper of approx. 20,000 characters (min. 8 - max. 10 pages) at the end of the course

The permitted materials will be announced in each case. By registering for the course, students agree to a possible software-supported plagiarism check of their written work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement is a positive overall assessment resulting from the grades of the individual oral and written components. Each partial performance must be positive in order to achieve a positive overall assessment.
The grading system is 1-5 in descending order (1=very good; 5=insufficient).

The grading is broken down as follows:
100-87% = 1
86-75% = 2
74-63% = 3
62-51% = 4
≤ 50% = 5
Grade 5 will be given to those who score 50% or less.

An attendance requirement of 80% applies to the course. If attendance is below this, a major assessment criterion is not met and therefore the course cannot be credited.

Examination topics

The overall grade is calculated from the assessments of the individual oral and written components (see "Assessment and permitted materials" and "Minimum requirements and assessment criteria").
