Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Simone Weil's thinking in a unique way combines illusion-free political judgment, an unwavering sense of justice, and the uncompromising search for spiritual truth. This mixture produces distinctive results where Weil considers concrete political and ethical questions in the light of mystical experience. It opens up the perspective of a mystical politics, which Weil develops under the influence of the history of violence of the 1930s and 1940s, but which also seems to be of relevance today. In the seminar, we will examine the genesis and implications of Weil's mystical-political thinking. We will discuss the ambivalent, if not problematic aspects of Weil's reflections, as well as the question to what extent her approach might provide answers to the current political and cultural situation. The seminar is a reading only seminar without student presentations. The focus will be on selected writings of Weil. In addition, we will include authors who are either in productive tension with Weil or who think her approach further.
