Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Albert Camus is one of the great novelists of the 20th century. His importance as a philosopher, however, remains controversial to this day, although Camus saw his novels, plays, and philosophical essays as an inseparable unity. While Camus rejects any belief in a system, he places his thought itself in the tradition of the philosophy of life and existence, which centers on the finitude of the human subject. "If revolt could found a philosophy, it would be"-as Camus points out in L'Homme révolté-"a philosophy of limits, of calculated ignorance, and of daring." In this sense, Camus hinted at his philosophy of limits in his early work, made important self-corrections during the war, and sharpened his philosophical thinking in numerous texts on contemporary political issues, especially the totalitarian ideologies of the twentieth century, the Algerian war, and the question of capital punishment.
This seminar will explore the multiple themes of Camus's philosophy of borders in the different phases of his work. The focus will be on the two philosophical essays The Myth of Sisyphus. An Attempt on the Absurd (1942) and Man in Revolt (1951).
