Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar shall convey the basic principles of suicide prevention through crisis intervention for theology students who are likely to be confronted with people in suicidal crises in schools and pastoral work. It is also open to other students, especially suited for future teachers.
- Theological-historical and canonical-legal aspects of suicide, especially the changes in the 20th century (from the Old Testament to current moral theology).
- Human science findings on suicidality, especially sociology and psychology (from Durkheim via Ringel to today)
- Philosophical and theological-ethical problems of suicidality (from the Stoa to Camus and Amery)
- Pre-suicidal development and the concept of crisis intervention

Assessment and permitted materials

Required during the seminar, in addition to active participation, is the preparation of one unit (ca. 2 hours) with presentation and discussion (evt. in a group) and a written seminar paper according to usual scientific standards of about 3.000 words.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendance (10%), presentation and moderation of one unit (30%), written seminar paper (60%).

Examination topics

- oral paper should present key points and stimulate discussion
- in the context of a seminar paper, a sub-topic from the context of the seminar is to be written with reference to relevant secondary literature .
