Aims, contents and method of the course

The study of temporary events, festivals and participant experiences in religious studies, anthropology and sociology is now of interest to many scholars worldwide. The aim of this course is to provide an insight into why temporary events are of interest to researchers, to introduce the main theories and research now considered ’classics’ in the study of events in religious studies, and to introduce students to empirical research on the topic from around the world.
On successful completion of the course, students will have
- An insight into the development of research on temporary experiences, tourism and events, and research on festivals from around the world in the field of religious studies.
- An in-depth knowledge of specific contemporary research focusing on heritage events, music festivals and religious/spiritual festivals.
- Gained knowledge of methodological approaches to the study of temporary events.
Teaching methods
Lecture with Power Point presentations. All materials (presentations, additional texts) will be uploaded to the learning platform after each unit. Questions relevant to the exam will be discussed in class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Final written exam (100%) in English, upon request in German.
