Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course “History of the Roman Catholic Inquisition(s) and Related Institutions” explores the history of the Roman Catholic Inquisition. After an introductory part on the inquisition during the Middle Ages, the course will focus on the establishment of the Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition and the Congregation of the Index of Forbidden Books in the fifteenth century until the creation of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the twentieth century.

Adopting perspectives proper of social history and history of State-Church relations, the course outlines the relations of the Inquisition(s) with other ecclesiastical institutions and statal jurisdictions, especially in Catholic countries.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course assessment comprises attendance (30 %), participation in class (30 %), and a written essay between 10.000-15.000 characters (40 %).

In the case of suspicion of non-transparent use of AI (e.g. through citation or indication of the type of use), the course instructor has the right to conduct a “grade-relevant discussion".
