The Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, plays an important role in the liturgical lifer, spirituality, and formulation of Christological dogma in the Eastern Orthodox Churches. This seminar will explore the development of the understanding and celebration of the mystery of the Mother of God in patristic thinking, the Byzantine rite, and modern Eastern Orthodox theology.Learning outcomes:
• Students will know a general outline of the history of the theology and devotion to the Mother of God in the Christian East
• Students will be able to analyze the role of the Mother of God in the liturgical life of the Byzantine rite
• Students will be able to identify and theologically reflect on important themes relating to the mystery of the Mother of God in contemporary Eastern Orthodox theologyLearning activities:
