Aims, contents and method of the course

Description:
The Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, plays an important role in the liturgical lifer, spirituality, and formulation of Christological dogma in the Eastern Orthodox Churches. This seminar will explore the development of the understanding and celebration of the mystery of the Mother of God in patristic thinking, the Byzantine rite, and modern Eastern Orthodox theology.

Learning outcomes:
• Students will know a general outline of the history of the theology and devotion to the Mother of God in the Christian East
• Students will be able to analyze the role of the Mother of God in the liturgical life of the Byzantine rite
• Students will be able to identify and theologically reflect on important themes relating to the mystery of the Mother of God in contemporary Eastern Orthodox theology

Learning activities:
Presentations by the teacher, presentations of assigned reading material by students, written summaries, group discussions, and written essays.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will be graded both on their active participation in group discussions at the seminar and on their individual written work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mandatory participation in the seminars. Students may be absent two times without special cause. Students must achieve a minimum of 50 points to pass.

Examination topics

1 (sehr gut) -> 100-89 points
2 (gut) -> 88-76 points
3 (befriedigend) -> 75-63 points
4 (genügend) -> 62-50 points
5 (nicht genügend) -> 49-0 points
Written paper is worth 40 points, seminar presentations are worth 40 points, and participation in seminar discussion is worth 20 points.
