Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The proseminar introduces students to the methodological and practical research basics of the study of theology. The aim is to impart basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills for academic work.

The main contents of the proseminar include: Library science/skills, literature research, knowledge about how to find and deal with sources, bibliography and citation (with an introduction to Citavi 6), writing academic papers, oral presentations and handouts, the Moodle learning platform, hermeneutics and the scientific concept of truth, criteria of academic argumentation and a critical and appreciative feedback culture.
The proseminar is aligned with the subject canon of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Vienna and is orientated towards the various methods of theological research.
This enables students to acquire key competences in academic writing and the critical reception of academic content.

After completing the course, students are able to compile a bibliography on a specific topic with the help of comprehensive literature research, apply the faculty's internal guidelines for academic work, name methods of theological research and implement them in the writing of a proseminar paper.

The proseminar is partly held together with the course "Academic German for Theologians". This enables an exchange in a larger group of students (German and non-German native speakers) who have recently started their studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology.

Assessment and permitted materials

The overall performance consists of oral (presentation) and written partial performances (definition of theological terms, writing down the results of a literature research, bibliography, handout, power point presentation, written proseminar paper) on a topic chosen or assigned from a list at the beginning of the course and from oral participation (discussions, feedback) during of the course. The proseminar paper to be completed at the end of the semester is approx. 20,000 characters long (min. 8 - max. 10 pages).

The permitted materials will be announced in each case. By registering for the course, students agree to a possible software-supported plagiarism check of their written work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement is a positive overall assessment resulting from the grades of the individual oral and written components. Each partial performance must be positive in order to achieve a positive overall assessment.
The grading system is 1-5 in descending order (1=very good; 5=insufficient).

The grading is broken down as follows:
100-87% = 1
86-75% = 2
74-63% = 3
62-51% = 4
≤ 50% = 5
Grade 5 will be given to those who score 50% or less.

An attendance requirement of 80% applies to the course. If attendance is below this, a major assessment criterion is not met and therefore the PS cannot be credited.

Examination topics

The overall grade is calculated from the assessments of the individual oral and written components (see "Assessment and permitted materials" and "Minimum requirements and assessment criteria").
