Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has once again shown us that peace cannot be taken for granted. The war not only calls into question the effectiveness of the principle of "peace through law", but urges the entire ethics of peace to rethink its foundations. Against this background, an examination of the long tradition of peace ethics and of current ethical questions of violence, war and peace is absolutely essential. In this seminar you will learn about the central developments, traditions and approaches of Christian and philosophical peace ethics. We will address some fundamental questions of peace ethics (e.g. Is there a just war? When is it permissible to use violence?) and also look at current peace ethics issues, e.g. concerning terrorism, cyber wars and autonomous weapons.By reading relevant texts, you will become familiar with theories, paradigms and terms of peace ethics. The seminar should enable you to independently identify and reflect on the ethical issues associated with war, peace and violence. In addition, the seminar should contribute to a deepening of academic skills, especially in the area of text analysis and academic writing.
