    Aims, contents and method of the course

    The seminar examines the relationship between ethics and psychoanalysis by using classic texts by Sigmund Freud, Herbert Marcuse, Jacques Lacan and others to explore the impact of psychoanalysis' anthropological assumptions on theory formation in general ethics, social ethics and political ethics. To this end, the first part of the seminar briefly recapitulates ethical theory formation, while the second part examines various classic texts of psychoanalysis that deal (directly or indirectly) with (normative) social issues.

    Students should critically reflect on the significance of anthropological assumptions in psychoanalytic literature for ethical theory formation. This requires a detailed examination of classic texts of psychoanalysis. These should be understood in their basic features and placed in relation to ethical reflection.

    Method:
    In preparation for the seminar, students must read the text and post a short comment or question on the Moodle forum. These posts can be used for discussion in the seminar. One student will be chosen to take responsibility for the respective chapter and moderate the discussion together with the seminar leader.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    In order to successfully complete the course, students must write short posts on Moodle about the texts discussed, be responsible for one of the texts discussed (‘sponsorship’) and write two short essays. A maximum of two sessions may be missed.
