Aims, contents and method of the course

ACHTUNG: Vorlesung geblockt von 05.10.18 - 23.11.18 (jeweils Freitag 15:00 - 18:15) - es wird eine Pause in der Mitte jedes Blocks geben. Im Anschluss an die VO Antike kann ab 30.11.18 die ebenfalls geblockte VO Philosophie des Mittelalters zur gleichen Zeit besucht werden. Die VO Mittelalter findet dann bis zum Ende des Semesters jeden Freitag ebenfalls von 15:00 - 18:15 im HS 6 statt.

Die Philosophie der Antike ist aus mehreren Hinsichten bis in das Denken der Gegenwart relevant. Immerhin griff die Antike, wenn auch nicht sämtlich in Lösungen, so doch in Problemansätzen und Fragestellungen sämtliche Herausforderungen des Denkens auf, die seit bald drei Millennien bis in unsere Tage philosophisch verhandelt werden. Was ist Wahrheit? Wie bestimmt sich das Gute? Warum nach dem Seienden fragen? Was bedeuten Erkenntnis und Wissenschaft? sind nur einige Auszüge des Kataloges an Aufgaben, die im geistesgeschichtlichen Faden unter dem Namen „Antike“ subsumiert werden. Deren Anfänge im mythologischen Denken sind dabei ebenso zu berücksichtigen, wie ihre vielfältigen logischen Ansätze in der sogenannten Vorsokratik und Sophistik, und über das Dreigestirn der attischen Philosophie (Sokrates, Platon, Aristoteles) hinaus in die mannigfachen Traditionen des Hellenismus und der römischen Philosophie (Stoizismus, Epikureismus, Skeptizismus, Akademiker, Kyniker, ...) zu führen. Nicht zuletzt ist sodann der Ausgang der Antike im Zusammenhang der Entwicklung früher christlicher Philosophie (apostolische Väter, Patristiker) in Auseinandersetzung mit dem Neuplatonismus und weiteren spätantiken Schulen zu verhandeln.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam about the topics of the lecture, usually held in German. The exam dates will be presented here, on moodle and under the following web address: http://ph-ktf.univie.ac.at/studium. Presumably there will be four exam dates: one at the end of the term and three over the course of the following term. Permitted materials are the expertise you gained in the lecture as well as your memory.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Questions will be asked according to the worksheets; all questions have to be answered. In order to pass the exam, sufficient expertise has to be proven.
