Im Sommersemester werden insgesamt drei Prüfungstermine angeboten. Letzte Prüfungsmöglichkeit voraussichtlich im Juni 2022.

Die VO wird in hybridem Format stattfinden, d.h., es besteht die Möglichkeit zur Präsenzteilnahme (Raumkapazität 48 Personen). Zusätzlich wird es einen Livestream sowie Aufzeichnungen jeder VO-Sitzung geben.
Es gilt die jeweils aktuelle (2,5+) G-Regel und FFP2-Maskenpflicht, Studierende müssen sich daher entsprechend ausweisen. Bitte planen Sie Zeit für die Kontrolle ein.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: The lecture gives an overview of authoritative positions in ancient philosophy, from Ionic natural philosophy to late antique Neoplatonism. Focal points are the beginnings of cosmological speculation, the connection of metaphysics, ethics and politics in Plato and its relation to contemporary sophistry, an introduction to Aristotelian thought (logic, natural philosophy, metaphysics and ethics), non-mechanistic atomism in Democritus, Epicurus and Lucretius, the Neoplatonic philosophy of the One.
At a fundamental level, the lecture is interested in the ways in which ancient thought brings together theory and practice, so that philosophy is not just an activity alongside others, but an integral way of life.

Objectives: The lecture introduces influential positions in ancient philosophy. It lays a foundation for dealing with both the wider history of philosophy and systematic philosophical questions.

Methods: The lecture is divided into 70 minutes of lecture and 20 minutes for questions and discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam of 90 minutes. Due to the Corona pandemic, however, it is also possible that there will be oral exams via Jitsi, duration: 15 minutes.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of the subject matter, independence of presentation. In addition, productive participation in the discussion will have a positive effect on the overall grade. At least 51% of achievable points.

Examination topics

The subject matter presented in the lecture. Thesis sheets summarising the relevant aspects are uploaded to Moodle for each session.
