Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture clarifies the concept of wisdom. It presents different theological approaches to Old Testament wisdom texts. The focus is on the books of Job, Proverbs and Qoheleth.The books are surveyed individually and treated thematically. The wisdom literature deals with the fundamental themes of life: how to deal with suffering, theodicy and justice; image of God, knowledge of God and creation; transience of life, resurrection / afterlife, wisdom and Torah, education, human being (anthropology). Extra-biblical texts are included in order to grasp the theological questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam (90min). Depending on the pandemic situation, this will be conducted as a presence exam and/or online exam. Dates:
Monday, 3. July 2023, 9.45–11.15
Tuesday, 25. July 2023, 13.15–15.15
Monday, 25. September 2023, 9.45–11.45

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You will be asked four questions about the lecture, three of which must be chosen and answered in short essays. Each essay counts for 33%.
