Students are familiar with key texts of early Christ-groups and their surroundings in which enslaved persons and ancient slavery play an important role. They can place these writings in their respective literary and historical contexts and compare them with each other. Students are able to apply the exegetical methods introduced in the New Testament Proseminar and articulate their own ideas based on various methodological approaches and knowledge of selected current scholarship.Contents:
In this course, selected New Testament texts dealing with enslaved persons as members of early Christ-groups and with slavery in Greco-Roman antiquity are presented and contextualized with other early Christian writings and their socio-cultural contexts. These texts are analyzed and interpreted using different methods as well as discussed referring to current research. Methods:
The methods studied in the New Testament Proseminar are deepened, and historical research with “avatars” is introduced.
